Luke 1:1-4
Dear Theophilos:
Concerning the matters that have taken place among us, many people have undertaken to draw up accounts 2based on what was handed down to us by those who from the start were eyewitnesses and proclaimers of the message. 3Therefore, Your Excellency, since I have carefully investigated all these things from the beginning, it seemed good to me that I too should write you an accurate and ordered narrative, 4so that you might know how well-founded are the things about which you have been taught.
John 1:1-5
1In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
2He was with God in the beginning.
3All things came to be through him,
and without him nothing made had being.
4In him was life,
and the life was the light of mankind.
5The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness has not suppressed it.
Mark 1:1-3
1The beginning of the Good News of Yeshua the Messiah, the Son of God:
2It is written in the prophet Yesha‘yahu,
“See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you;
he will prepare the way before you.”
3“The voice of someone crying out:
‘In the desert prepare the way for Adonai!
Make straight paths for him!’”
Context Questions:
Who is Theopholis and does the meaning of his name give us a allegorical clue?
What "matters" could have been taking place at this time?
Where is Luke writing from? Could this be a clue into the "matters"?
What does the title "Your Excellency" indicate?
It is one thing to call it "accurate", but what could "ordered" indicate?
How does the insight that Theopholis is being taught inform our perspective of who he is?
